Do You Speak English?

Da oggi in poi, se un turista straniero in visita al nostro paese dovesse chiedere a qualcuno del posto “Do you speak English?” è molto probabile che la risposta sia “Yes, I do. Can I help you?”. Il motivo? Perché a Villanovaforru è esplosa la “English-mania”!

Tutto ha avuto inizio da un’idea di Padre Giuseppe Pusceddu (nostro illustre concittadino!) che collabora da qualche tempo con il Collegio Nord Americano di Roma. Venuto a conoscenza del progetto d’investimento da parte degli irlandesi e tenuto conto che oggigiorno la lingua inglese dovrebbe far parte del bagaglio culturale di ognuno di noi, ha proposto all’amministrazione comunale un corso d’inglese per i residenti.

Il corso è stato tenuto da due giovani seminaristi americani di stanza a Roma, Luke e Michael, e ha avuto una durata di tre settimane. Gli studenti erano diciannove e sono stati divisi in due gruppi. Luke ha insegnato da solo nelle prime due settimane ed è stato aiutato da Michael nell’ultima. Alla fine del corso, tutti gli studenti sono rimasti molto soddisfatti.

Subiddanoesu ha incontrato ed intervistato, per i suoi lettori, i due insegnanti.

Subiddanoesu – Bene, è un vero piacere incontrarvi. Da dove venite?

Luke – Vermont, USA.

Michael – Vermont.

Subiddanoesu – Non è uno stato molto famoso, dov’è esattamente il Vermont?

Luke – Il Vermont è a sud di Montreal in Canada, ed ad ovest di Boston.

Subiddanoesu – Quanti anni avete?

Subiddanoesu – Da quanto tempo siete seminaristi?

Michael – Due anni.

Subiddanoesu – Da quanto tempo a Roma?

Michael – Un anno.

Subiddanoesu – Avevate un lavoro prima?

Luke – Si, io ero un avvocato.

Michael – Io ero un insegnante.

Subiddanoesu – E’ stata questa la vostra prima esperienza come insegnanti?

Michael – No. Ho insegnato inglese in India prima di venire qua in Sardegna.

Subiddanoesu – Qual è stata la vostra prima impressione appena siete arrivati qua?

Insieme – Abbiamo pensato che era idilliaco.

Subiddanoesu – Vi è piaciuta Villanovaforru?

Michael – No. Non mi è piaciuta!!! (Risata fragorosa)

Insieme – L’AMIAMO!

Subiddanoesu – Cosa vi è piaciuto di Villanovaforru?

Insieme – Abbiamo apprezzato la sua gente, il bel tempo, l’eccellente cucina, la sua interessante storia, la fede delle persone.

Luke – Inoltre io mi sono divertito tanto a giocare a pallavolo.

Subiddanoesu – Avete notato qualche differenza tra i sardi e i romani?

Insieme – I sardi sono molto amichevoli e puoi guardarli negli occhi quando parli.

Subiddanoesu – Cosa vi aspettavate da quest’esperienza?

Insieme – Noi non sapevamo cosa aspettarci di preciso, ma speravamo di trovare degli studenti intelligenti e di fare un interessante soggiorno in Sardegna. Fortunatamente cosi è stato!

Subiddanoesu – Cosa ne pensate dei vostri studenti?

Insieme – Pensiamo che i nostri studenti siano molto intelligenti, seri, ansiosi di imparare e che lavorino bene insieme.

Subiddanoesu – Bene. Il corso è finito. Quale consiglio li date per continuare a studiare da soli?

Insieme – Suggeriamo ai nostri studenti, di continuare a studiare la grammatica dal loro libro e di far pratica parlando inglese in qualunque occasione capiti… ad esempio con Ernesto e la sua famiglia!

Subiddanoesu – Cosa pensate di quest’esperienza?

Insieme – Pensiamo che sia stata la perfetta esperienza sarda… la gente socievole, la piazza, la chiesa e la cucina.

Subiddanoesu – Bene. Tante grazie. Speriamo di incontrarvi ancora. Sarete sempre i benvenuti qua a Villanovaforru! Dio vi benedica.

By today, if a foreign tourist who visits our village should ask somebody “Do you speak English?”, it’s probable that the answer will be “Yes, I do. Can I help you?”. Why? Because in Villanovaforru has exploded with the english-mania!

It all began with an idea of Father Giuseppe Pusceddu (our illustrius fellow-citizen!), that he collaborate whit the North American College in Rome. He heard about the Irish-project in our territory, but more important, the English language should be present in cultural background of everyone. He proposed to Municipal Administrators a English course for the residents.

The course taught by two young American seminarians in Rome, Luke and Michael, and it had a duration of three week. The number of students was nineteen and was divided in two groups. Luke Taught alone the first two week and Michael helped Luke in the last week.

At the end of the course all students were very satisfied.

Subiddanoesu met and interwiewed, for his readers, the two teachers.

Subiddanoesu – Well, it’s a pleasure to meet you. Where are you from?

Subiddanoesu – It isn’t a very famous state. Where is exactly Vermont State?

Luke – Vermont is south of Montreal, and west of Boston.

Michael – No. I taught English in India before comins to Sardinia.

Subiddanoesu – What was your first impression when you come here?

Together – We enjoyed the people, the warm weather, the excellent cuisine, the interesting history, the faith of the people.

Subiddanoesu – Do you have noticed any difference between Sardinian people and Roman people?

Together – The Sardinian people are more friendly and will look you in the eyes when speaking.

Together – We didn’t know what to expect, but were hoping that we would have intelligent students and have an interesting time in Sardinia. Fortunately, we did!

Together – We think our students are very intelligent, friendly, serious, eager to learn, and work well together.

Subiddanoesu – Good. The course ends, what advice would you give for continuing to study by yourself?

Together – We suggest that our students continue to study the grammar in their book and to practise speaking English wherever they can… maybe with Ernesto and his family!

Together – We think it has been the perfect Sardinian experience… the friendly people, the piazza and church, and the cuisine.
